The New Saints play their home games in Oswestry.

I’ve spent most of the week trying not to think about today. I distracted myself with a piece about Preston North End yesterday which can be found at the link below, but on the whole, it has been a football thought free week. Only as I write this, I remember I haven’t done the edited version of last week’s report for next week’s programme yet, so there’s some doubling up to be done tomorrow to get both in for Monday.

And so it is straight into the Accrington Stanley preamble, some of which may have been lifted straight from the preamble I did for the home game against them.

The current Accrington Stanley side are not a team to be confused with the entirely different Accrington team who were one of the founder members of the Football League back in 1888, the Stanley team existed whilst that Accrington team were in the league, and only took on the Accrington part to the name after the original team left the league and folded before the end of the nineteenth century. The original Stanley team folded themselves in 1966, and the current team are a phoenix club founded two years later in 1968. That original team resigned from the league during the 1961–62 season after thirty-four games and had their record expunged, along with Aldershot, one of only two teams to have done so (Maidstone and Bury never got around to starting their seasons when they were expelled, and Port Vale took over expelled Leeds City’s record midway through the season). They were replaced in the league by Oxford United.

But I did confuse the two sides as a kid, it was many years before I learnt that they were two sides. As a kid totting up years’ worth of stats taken from Rothman’s yearbooks into graph paper notebooks (making my own manual spreadsheets long before Microsoft had even thought of Excel), I treated them as the same team (a mistake I also made with including Middlesbrough Ironopolis’s one season in with Middlesbrough). Meanwhile as I scribbled in the notebooks, my parents looked on thinking what the hell the little freak was doing and wondering if it was too late to go back to the hospital and query whether they’d been given the wrong baby.

But I had certainly heard of Accrington Stanley long before their name was dragged by the infamous Milk Marketing Board advert of the. Exactly.

Although most card and sticker manufacturers acted as if they had not. There are no A&BC, Topps, or Proset cards for them, though there are a few Topps cards for one of their former managers – Leighton James. I’ve gone for one from when he was at Burnley as it’s only just up the road. And there is always the supposed quote about him from Brian Clough – “yes, he’s deceptively quick, he’s slower than he looks.” Although in a link to the piece from yesterday, Bill Shankly is also supposed to have said this about Pat Crerand.

Of course, they do appear in this year’s EFL collection from Panini.

There is no overlap of current players in the two squads today, and there has been very little overlap over the years with only Tom Dallison, Joe Maguire, and Jack Rose who have played for both.

We have played Accrington Stanley eleven times in the league, all of the games have been in League Two, we have won five, drawn three, and lost three. Away it has been three wins, and two losses. We played against them for two years in the Conference when we first got promoted, and before Accrington were promoted to the league in 2006. We won one of the four games and lost the other three. And we have played them in the FA Cup, which was another loss.

There are a few programmes in the collection from the games over the years at various levels, including that famous victory here at the end of the 2011-12 season which saw Crawley Town promoted to League One in their first season in the Football League. All of which was before my time as a Crawley fan.

We need a win desperately today to help keep us in the league this time. It will be a different type of celebration if we do manage it.

Speaking of different types of celebration, there was one happening at The Crown pub in the couple of hours before the game as Crawley Town fans gathered to mark a year’s anniversary since the passing of “Travel” Ken Blackmore.

Cheltenham Town did their fellow CTFC no favours whatsoever on Tuesday night as they let a lead slip and ended up losing 3-1 at home to Tranmere Rovers who got their first win since beating us back in January. It means that Tranmere are now two points ahead of us in the battle to avoid the drop.

Meanwhile we go into the game in twenty-first position, five places and fourteen points behind our hosts, and one point above Newport County who play Oldham Athletic at home today, and two ahead of both Barrow and Harrogate Town who play Cambridge United and Walsall respectively, with both of them being the away team. A win today for us, coupled with a failure by Harrogate to win would mean safety as Barrow play Newport in the last game of their seasons. It is far beyond squeaky bum time.

Quiz Time – The final one of the year and it’s not even a proper question at this barrel bottom scraping point in the season. Our opponents today have a man’s forename as their team’s suffix. Can anyone come up with suggestions for other teams that have the same? (So not Alexandra or Victoria.)

And so that is the away part of the season complete, only the final home game of the season remains against automatic promotion chasing Salford City next Saturday. A team that apart from a mad minute in the second half we had the beating of at their place back in November. Let’s finish the season with a high and have a win at home to wrap it all up for this year.

Come on you reds.

Quiz Time Answer — Which multi Welsh League title winners play their home games in Shropshire?
